My client suffered acute adrenals collapse. She was exhausted and nothing seemed to make sense anymore. We started into a Bodyscapes experience, first looking through a medical illustration book to find a picture of the adrenals. They were not listed in the index. I looked in another book. Turns out, there are no pictures of the adrenals alone. No drawings of those tiny triangular shapes by themselves. They are always shown connected to the kidneys as is true to our biologies.
adrenal gland \ad-re-nal ‘gland\ n : either of a pair of complex endocrine organs near the anterior border of the kidney consisting of a mesodermal cortex that produces steroids like sex hormones and hormones concerned with metabolic function.
“This already makes complete sense to what is going on in my life! ” She exclaimed. I instructed her to make a list of words in the definition which held personal meaning. Intrigued, she looked up the definitions for the words pair, complex, mesoderm and hormones, adding more and more words to her private list. She ended the writing component of the Bodyscapes Program, looking up these same words in Roget’s Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases. Below is her prose narrative:
two peas in a pod, committed to a complex partnership, joined to help aid, in spite of fear of death, in relation ’til liberation, determined to live by ones wits, relating, concealed in the connection of the ultimate companion, pairing with the self
The drawing component of the Bodyscapes Program, the pastel drawing of her adrenals, took what seemed like minutes for her to create. She confessed that her spirit was on fire, pumped with the steroids that the definition to adrenal glands talked about. Things which once did not seem to make sense to her now did. We stood back, looking at the drawing, marveling at those triangular adrenal glands. They looked like seashells mounted into engagement rings, referencing the last line in her prose.
The connection of the ultimate companion, pairing with the self.
